Food Photography: Treat To Your Eyes

Posted by on October 17, 2012

A good photograph of food makes you taste the food with your eyes. It is important to alter the text with photos while writing about food so it gets visually appealing, it makes you crave for that food. Food photography is one of the very difficult kinds of photography though it seems easy to your eyes.

Because of the complications of the arrangements and restricted working time of the food, this field is always in demand. Your talents will be definitely in demand, if you think you can master this kind of photography.

Food photography focuses on two things mainly, texture and color. These two things bring an entire host of considerations while planning a shoot, such as lighting, background, props and equipment.

Equipment: The equipment needs are very simple and many photographers have the items already with them, a tripod, remote shutter release, lenses, and a digital single lens reflex. You can alternate the self timer feature on your camera if you don’t have a remote shutter.

Lighting: Lighting has not been listed in the list of equipment above if you see carefully. In food photography, bare flashes never work because of the hot sports and reflections created by the flashes. It is recommended to use a consistent lighting, like fluorescent, natural and incandescent. Natural light coming through a window emitted by white transparent curtains makes a good directional light. Just know that the direction is changing through the entire day as the sun moves through the sky. If you have soft boxes already with modeling lights, you can make use of them as well.

Avoid using the auto setting on your white balance. Modify the white balance to complement the light’s color, so you can take off any color case because of lighting color temperature. This will help you in saving your time as you don’t have to rectify color while editing once the photos are put on your computer.
