Digital Camera Buying Guide

Posted by on January 24, 2015

sony 1While buying a digital camera, it is not really important which models or features are the best because it depends on the individual’s choice and also, changes with time. However some factors may need to be considered in order to make a correct decision.

What Do You Need?

Many buyers while buying a digital camera forget what they need the camera for. You can ask some questions to yourself before heading towards market:

  • What type of photography do I intend to do? (Landscapes, sports, portraits, etc)
  • What will be the conditions in which I will do the photography? (Indoor, outdoor, bright light, low light)
  • Do I wish to learn photography as an art or want to stay on the auto mode for most of the time?
  • Which features will I need? (Image stabilization, long zoom, large LCD screen, etc)
  • Are size and portability important to me?
  • What is my budget?

Once you ponder upon all these questions, you will get a much clearer picture of the camera you want to buy in your mind and that will help you in making the buying decision.

Are Megapixels Very Important?

A few years ago, the megapixel count of a camera was very important and even a rise of 1 megapixel was significant. However nowadays the most modern cameras sport at least 5 megapixels, and so, it is not that crucial. Actually, an upper range can be a disadvantage to have images so large that they accommodate an enormous space on computers and memory cards.

While deciding upon megapixels, you should first think upon “do I want to print these shots?” If yes, how large you want them? If you are printing images only at a normal size, anything more than around 4 megapixels will be good.

Remember “Extras”

Remember that the price quoted for the camera you want may not be the final expense you will make since there are various other extras you will need, like:

  • Camera case
  • Spare batteries and charger
  • Memory cards
  • Lenses
  • Reflectors
  • Filters
  • External flashes
  • Tri/monopods

Some stores offer all such extras included with the camera or at least a discount when you buy more than one.

Point and Shoot or DSLR?

Though a DSLR is more affordable, it’s not for everyone. Remember that it is heavier, larger and more difficult to clean, and also harder to operate than a point and shoot camera. However it has some plus points too, like better image quality, adaptability (ease in changing lenses), speed, optical viewfinder, and so on. On the other hand, point and shoot cameras are great because of their strengths like small size and light weight, noiseless working, auto mode and low price.

Reviews

Reading authentic reviews like that on CameraStore.com.au is the best way to gain knowledge before heading to shopping. If you want to buy Sony digital cameras in Australia, it’s better to read its review first and then make a decision.
